The first Indian Premier League or commonly known as IPL was started in 2008. The
vice president of BCCI, Mr. Lalit Modi started the IPL in India. The history behind starting
IPL in India was, the stunning performance of the T20 world cup team of India. Then Mr.
Vice president applied the same concept but within India, by using some city names as
teams. The top franchise will buy the city teams and players from all over India and all over
the world can participate in it. From revenue, representing a city on a world platform, and
filtration of some young talents, all can be done through a single T20 tournament. That’s
how IPL started to occupy a place in people’s hearts.

When the First Indian Premier League Started?

The first match was held on 18th April 2008 in Bangalore. The match was between Kolkata
Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore. KKR made a total of 222 runs by 3 wickets.
RCB was chasing 223 runs for the match. However, their journey for the first match ended
at 82 all out, by playing 15.1 overs out of 20. So, KKR was the team that won the first Indian
Premier League match. KKR defeated RCB by 140 runs.

The final match of the first Indian Premier League was being played in Mumbai. The two
finalists were Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Rajasthan Royals was the winner
of the season. Rajasthan Royals was the team that won the first Indian Premier
League.
